Make sure the measuring tape is level across your back and isn’t sagging in the front or pulling in the back. If you don’t have a flexible measuring tape, you can use a string and then measure the string with a ruler.

How to Measure Your Waist

Use a flexible measuring tape to determine your waist size. Stretch to one side to find the crease of your waist. Standing up straight and exhale, the number where the measuring tape overlaps itself is your waist size. If you are measuring for garments with a lot of negative ease like leggings or form-fitting dresses, you should measure your true waist size. Take your natural waist measurement for these garments and subtract 2-4 inches from that number to get your pattern size.
